SURF CITY is an upmarket 118,500-word post-climate disaster thriller that takes place in possibly the last enclave of civilization 700 years in the future. Told through the eyes of two teenage girls born on opposites sides of a divided society, one living above ground and the other below, at the brink of civil war; their story is steeped in political gamesmanship and mystery, similar H.M Wolfe’s DAGGERMOUTH. Like Marie Lu’s LEGEND, SURF CITY features a future dystopian world and class divide that creates a rich backdrop for memorable characters as their destinies collide.
The climate wars have darkened the sun and decimated earth’s population. Those who live on the surface get maybe 30 years if they’re lucky. The Surfs are willing to die young to supply power to the privileged 5,000 families of New Angeles and run their luxe underground city in exchange for protection. But this seemingly peaceful symbiosis that has existed for over 100 years is threatened when Talia’s father is elected President, and vows to put the ‘e’ back in Surf. On the night of his inauguration, all Talia wants is to meet her crush, Blaze, the leader of the Surfs, a boy whose life has been steeped in tragedy and mystery, a boy her father loathes. Talia and her brother sneak out to attend a Surf rave. In the chaos that follows, they are accidentally kidnapped, setting off a psychological and physical war that can only be fought fairly by Talia teaming up with Fly, a Surf girl her own age. The choices they make may prevent or ignite mutually assured destruction for perhaps the last enclave of civilization on the planet.
